What are you rooted and grounded in? A tree gets its nourishment from the soil through its roots. The health of the tree, and the quality of the fruit is dependent upon the soil in which the tree is rooted. A tree is also grounded by its roots. If a tree is grounded in poor soil, it may not withstand the storms of life. What are you rooted and grounded in?
In Ephesians chapter 3:14-19 the Apostle Paul wrote this, “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, 16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
The end result Paul was praying for was that his readers would be filled with the fullness of God! In order to achieve this Paul prayed they would be strengthened by the Holy Spirit, so Christ could dwell in them, that they might be rooted and grounded in love. This got me thinking. What am I rooted and grounded in?
Our culture promotes self-indulgence, sensuality, pride, and greed. In our culture it is all about me, my, and mine. When we become rooted and grounded in these poisons of our culture it has a profound impact on our Spiritual lives, and ultimately on the fruit we bear.
In Ephesian 4:11-16 Paul said, “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”
These truths remind me of the old saying, “You put garbage in, you get garbage out.” When we immerse ourselves in a culture of self-indulgence, sensuality, pride, and greed we become filled with the fullness of this fallen world. When we are rooted and grounded in love, Christ, and His church, we are built up, we grow up in Him, and are filled with the fullness of Christ.
Father in Heaven, Holy is Your magnificent Name! I pray today, that I might be rooted and grounded in You. I pray, with Your help, I would cast behind me the poisons of this fallen world, and turn toward You, the Living God, that I might be filled with Your marvelous fullness! In Jesus Name I pray, Amen!
